Minnesota Hockey Announces Rule Changes

Penalty for Boarding and Checking-From-Behind Increases . The Minnesota Hockey Board of Directors voted unanimously at its winter board meeting to strengthen the severity of the penalty issued to players who are cited for boarding and checking-from-behind infractions. These rule changes are being adopted on a pilot basis and will be reevaluated at the conclusion of the 2012 Minnesota Hockey season. Making Hockey Safer and Better by Taking the Hits Out of Peewees

This weekend the Minnesota Hockey Board of Directors will decide how to vote on a number of issues at the USA Hockey Annual meeting in June. The elected directors to USA Hockey will attempt to represent the wishes of the majority of stakeholders in Minnesota. Foremost on the radar screen for some is the proposal to take body checking out of the pee wee level of hockey. The proposal has drawn some interesting commentary and heated debate among some opponents and proponents. In “Making Hockey Safer and Better” I try to outline the important issues surrounding this change.

Not all Kids are Hockey Superstars

As the off season is now here two articles share some ideas for parents of youth players. The first is “Not all Kids are Hockey Superstars”. The second is “The Burnout Factor”. Both articles deal with the reality of less than one percent of kids advance to the top levels of college and less advance to the professional ranks. The kids that advance are the top level athletes and no amount of training will make an average athlete an elite athlete. Most top level hockey players also excel at other sports because they are good athletes to start with.
