Are there separate programs for boys and girls?

The majority of our teams are co-ed, but at older age levels, PRAHA strives to offer girls only teams when there are enough girls to do so.

What age can kids start playing?

There is no minimum age to join our association. Players should have the social and emotional maturity to be away from their parents for an hour and receive instruction from other adults.

A common recommendation is players should be at least 4 years of age as of September 1.

When does the season start?

Mid-to-late October

How long is the hockey season?

The season will run from late October through February for Mite/8U teams.

How long are practices?

Practices are 60 minutes in length. Players should be ready to go on the ice at the designated start time.  It is usually best to be at the rink 20 minutes before your stated ice time in order to be ready on time.

Where do we skate?

All ice times are held at the Ted O'Johnson Ice Arena.

Do I have to be at every practice/game?

No. While it is beneficial and recommended to attend every possible training and scrimmage session, it is not mandatory and will not impact playing time.

How are teams formed?

Mite teams are formed based on age and skill level based on evaluations by the coaches at that age group and input from the Hockey Director.

How many kids are on each team?

Typically there are 10-15 players per team.

What equipment do I need?

Helmet with facemask, mouth guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey pants (breezers), shin pads, hockey gloves, stick and skates. A hockey jersey and hockey socks are provided by PRAHA.

Where do I buy hockey equipment?

The closest hockey store is Top Shelf Hockey in Bemidji, MN. In addition, most sporting goods stores (Scheels, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc.) carry hockey equipment. Play It Again Sports offers a great place to purchase used hockey equipment in an effort to keep costs down.

Isn’t hockey equipment really expensive? Are there cheaper options?

Hockey equipment can be expensive, but it definitely doesn't have to be. PRAHA offers equipment to rent at no cost. There are options to buy used equipment, and for most equipment items, there is a wide range of price points when purchasing new gear.

My child would like to try hockey, but we are concerned about the cost.  Are there any options for financial assistance?

PRAHA does have programs available for families that need financial assistance. Click here for more information.

What should I do if I want to coach?

Visit the “Coaches” tab of the PRHockey.com website to submit an application and view the steps necessary to become a coach.

My child is not a very good skater, can he/she still play hockey?

Absolutely! This is a development program serving kids of various ages and abilities. No experience is necessary to participate.

Are parents expected to volunteer or do fundraising?

Yes. PRAHA is a volunteer run organization that owns and operates its own hockey area. The association depends on its members to assist in performing a number of tasks, and fundraising efforts help to reduce and limit the cost to participate. More information on volunteer hours are available here.
